America Is F*cked…….(Graphically at least)
This is Aaron Draplin telling me a story about a sign. He’s a graphic designer and very passionate about what he does. Strong language- mostly lots of F words.
My graphic design friends will enjoy, be angered by and frustrated with this story.
For historical reference, Blippo was designed in 1969.
There really isn’t anything as fun as a new suit. Today, I added Navy Blue to my closet. But what a pain in the ass it was to find the right one.
First off, let’s be clear - I know how to buy a suit. I sold countless suits to tall men, fat men, skinny men, kids, teens and yes, even dead men. My first part time job was selling suits and I did so for all my Cégep years and my first year of University. Today’s off the rack suits come in three classes - the cheap made in China too bulky sold to you as if they were made in Italy. The adjusted-coupe (made in China or Europe), where a 44R is actually a 38S and priced the cost of a small motorcycle. Ladies, it’s official, we now know how you feel. Finally, there’s the just-in-the-middle suits. Well made, well priced. (That could be a good catch line…Oh wait, damn). These types of suits are actually fairly well tailored, don’t need too much adjustments and can be purchased under 500$.
Secondly- staff in stores seem a bit fast on the judging. A guy walks in wearing jeans, a dress shirt and a sports jacket. I would guess that if that client is taking off his jacket and trying on suit jackets…he might be looking for something. Saying ‘hi’ would be nice.
If I say no to your 600$ suit that doesn’t mean I’m not interested in maybe buying two 275$ suits…instead of rushing me to the cash with one suit, offer me a second one, same price or similar and I might just say ‘yes’…I bet they didn’t teach you that trick in Snobby Salesman School, eh ?
All in all, today’s experience are noted below:
The Bay - Excellent service, a bit pushy, but didn’t end up buying there.
America - Suits are made to fit skinny, tall skeletons - not the average built Canadian Man. Who has a beard.
Les Ailes - There is no such thing as service there. Also, suits are terribly cheap.
Le Chateau - Same as America.
Simons - Salesmen ok, but depends on who helps you. In general, they all think they’re better than you. I was told I need a 48R - I’ve been wearing a 46R for years…Wide variety of suits. Ended up buying there - would actually have bought two but the salesman didn’t suggest it. Oh well.
